Twenty-seven people, including two new members, met on Saturday, September 12 at the New Life Christian Church in Wildwood for the regular monthly meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild.
Co-President Betty S led the meeting and provided our monthly reminder of our purpose statement:
“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”
There will be a board meeting on October 14 at 6 pm at the Panera Bread in Lake Sumter Landing. All are welcome to attend.
The October 10 CFMQG meeting will be held at New Life Christian Church, but our November 14 meeting will be held at The Villages Public Library at Belvedere. Please note this location change!
Treasurer Sandi K provided an update on our finances.
Co-Vice President Sharon J passed around a sign-up list for those attending QuiltCon. She also announced National Jelly Roll Day on September 19 and International Scrap Sorting Day on November 1. Sharon highlighted some of the MQG resources available to members, including the Curb Appeal pattern by Ashelyn Downs and an On Demand program on Working with Denim. Remember to check out the Resource Library on the MQG website! Sharon also announced that QuiltFest Jacksonville will be held September 17-19. Finally, she encouraged everyone to consider submitting their work to QuiltCon – entries are due by October 31.
Jane G’s 2026 QuiltCon quilt, In Search of Peace, is on exhibit this week at Carrefour – The European Quilt Show in Val d’Argent, France. In Search of Peace is part of the 20-quilt traveling exhibit, Selections from QuiltCon 2026.
Co-Sew-in Coordinators Beth S and Donna P announced the next sew-in, on September 19. This is a departure from our usual fourth Saturday date, so please take note! It will be held at The Villages Public Library at Pinellas Plaza and the sew and learn topic will be applique. Barb A’s 4-H group will be attending.
Mel T reminded everyone that the Second Chance Challenge reveal will take place at the October meeting. Details can be found on the Members Only page of the website. All participants will receive prizes!
Co-Workshop and Program Coordinator Jane G previewed other upcoming programs and workshops. In November, Shloe K will announce the 2027 challenge, and Karen E will present the list of programs and workshops for 2027. Our holiday party will be held in December. Anne G is also looking for members willing to share a look at their sewing space for an upcoming program.
Jane discussed the Tenets ‘n’ Techniques topic for this month, applique.
Co-Retreat Coordinator Patti R announced that registration is open for our upcoming Sleep at Home retreat November 5-7. It will be held at the Salvation Army in Lecanto, where a room is available from 8:15 am to 8 pm and is locked overnight. The cost is $80 and includes three lunches. Our sleepaway retreat at Luther Springs will be held from April 30 – May 3.
Co-Librarian Peggy L has lots of CFMQG merchandise for sale, and also announced several new library books.

Show and Tell
Beth S @blue_dragonfly5 shared Annabella, a 51 x 64″ quilt made using a quarter log cabin block from Christina Cameli set on point. Beth made this using scrap fabric and a corded binding. It was longarm quilted by Teresa K.
Beth also shared 30 Shades of Green, a quilt of original design. Beth used EQ8 to generate an altered grid. The quilt measures 52 x 52″ and is the fourth in her series of illusion quilts. Beth made this for the QuiltCon 2027 American Patchwork & Quilting Pick-A-Color Scrappy Challenge. This was also longarm quilted by Teresa K.
Irene R shared Home of the Brave, measuring 64 x 70″. Irene was inspired by a quilt in Jacquie Gering’s book, Walk 2.0, but put a big twist on her version. She made this quilt for another guild’s patriotic challenge, and the quilt will be donated to a veteran. Irene said that she wanted her quilt to be bright and radiate happiness and positivism. She quilted this on her domestic machine.
Irene also shared Happiness, a 46 x 61″ quilt. This quilt started with three paper-pieced elements from a pattern by Amy Friend. After making three, Irene realized she didn’t want to do any more paper piecing. She decided to use the three blocks as the foundation for an improvised quilt. It took her three years to finish because every step required a lot of thought on how she wanted it to look. She quilted it on her domestic machine and it also features embroidery and big stitch quilting.
Trish B shared Lilies of the Field, a 20.5 x 29.5″ quilt. Trish used traditional hand silkscreened fabric that she made in college and thread painted to add color. The quilt features free motion quilting, beading, and appliqued corded borders on two sides. Trish quilted this on her Bernina 820.
Trish’s second quilt is called Earthly Serenity, and measures 32 x 46.5″. She used all Japanese fabrics. The quilt was made using free motion quilting and walking foot quilting with variegated thread on her Bernina 820, as well as sashiko.
Trish’s final share was Taps, a 59 x 53.5″ quilt. Trish created this quilt as a tribute to her father, who spent 30 years in the Navy. The sunset inset was created using hand-painted fabric from her son Randy’s Artzy Chameleon Studio. She used Clip Art and raw edge applique to create the figures. Much of the quilt was walking foot quilted, but if you look closely at the upper left quadrant, you’ll see an image of a fallen soldier memorial quilted in. Trish drew this image, traced it on press and seal, and quilted over it.
Monique F @foleyderenne created Baby Bear using an Elizabeth Hartman pattern. This will be a gift for her future grand-nephew.
Monique’s second quilt will be donated to a veteran. She created this quilt from a pattern in Simply Moderne Magazine and quilted it herself.
Dee A shared an 18 x 18″ quilt she made from a four patch block using a technique taught by Beth S during the Sew and Learn portion of a previous sew-in. The mini workshop focused on how to make a traditional block more modern.
Dee shared a second quilt, measuring 48 x 48″. This quilt was created using the Zen Chic Sky pattern, and was Dee’s challenge quilt from our 2025 Designing Through the Decades Challenge. Dee chose the 1960s color palette and big stitch quilted this project.
Rosemary R’s quilt, Cashmere & Cocoa, measures 90 x 90″. This quilt was made using the Midnight Frames pattern. Rosemary was a little bit short on brown fabric, but was able to find what she needed on our “I Don’t Want It, You Can Have It!” table at a CFMQG meeting.
Cindy B @cbubblesnsews shared a 60 x 60″ quilt made from a portion of the 100 Modern Quilt Blocks she made from Tula Pink’s book. She quilted this on her domestic machine.
Cindy also shared Exploding Heart, created using the Exploding Heart pattern by Slice of Pi Quilts. This measures 72 x 72″ and was also quilted by Cindy on her domestic machine.
Linda H @flourishingpalms shared Ignite, a 62 x 64″ quilt. Linda designed this quilt for the QuiltCon 2027 American Patchwork & Quilting Pick-A-Color Scrappy Challenge. The quilt top is machine pieced with hand-appliqued bias tape. Linda used trapunto to give the yellow burst shape extra dimension. She quilted this on her Bernina 770 QE and embellished with big stitch and felted tufts.
Program
Linda H presented the program, Bias Tape. She described options for creating bias tape and showed a wide variety of creative ways to use in in quilts.
Workshop
Following the general meeting, members had the opportunity to learn more about bias tape – making it and using it – during a workshop with Linda H.
Seven members participated, cutting out bias tape and trying different techniques like:
- making tape with straight pins on an ironing board
- using Celtic bars
- and even using a Simplicity electric bias tape-maker!
Everyone left the workshop with ideas about how to incorporate bias tape in their modern quilts.
