Seventeen people gathered at The Villages Public Library at Belvedere for the regular monthly meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild on Saturday, July 11, and another joined by video call for the program.
Co-Vice President Sharon J led the meeting and began with a welcome and our purpose statement:
“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”
We were pleased to have two new members return to us after a pause in their membership, and we had one guest who saw our flyer in a local quilt shop.
On Wednesday, August 14 at 10 am, registration opens for QuiltCon workshops and lectures. Workshops in particular fill up quickly, some within minutes. Check out the Interactive Schedule in advance and be ready to sign up immediately if you plan to take a workshop at QuiltCon 2027.
Our next meeting is Saturday, August 8 at 10 am. We will be returning to our regular meeting location at New Life Christian Church in Wildwood, and the program will be Large Scale Freezer Paper Piecing.
Co-Sew-In Coordinator Beth S announced that the next sew-in will be Saturday, July 25 at The Villages Public Library at Pinellas Plaza from 9:30 am – 4:45 pm. The Sew and Learn topic is Modern Traditionalism, discussed at 12:30 pm. Beth has a deconstruction activity planned and requests participants bring a ruler, pencil, paper, scissors, and tape.
Co-Workshop Coordinator Karen E introduced Linda H to give an overview of her Bias Tape Workshop. This workshop will be held from 1 – 4 pm following our regular meeting on September 12. The cost is $20 and Linda will teach two techniques for making bias tape in various sizes, as well as methods to apply tape to a background. Registrants can choose to make the tape during the workshop to applique later at home (no sewing machine needed) or to make tape at home to applique during the workshop (sewing machine required). See Linda’s Show and Tell quilt below for an example of the kind of project you can make with bias tape!
Don’t forget about our Second Chance Challenge, which is due at our October 10 meeting. Details can be found on the Members Only page of our website.
Co-Retreat Coordinator Patti R reminded everyone that our next Sleep at Home retreat will be November 5 – 7 at the Salvation Army in Lecanto. Participants can leave their sewing machines and supplies in a locked room and return home each evening. Our next sleepaway retreat at Luther Springs will be Aril 30 – May 3, 2027.
Peggy L still has plenty of CFMQG logo merchandise available. She has tshirts, hats, bags and other items already embroidered, and can also embroider other items upon request.
Media Coordinator Courtney S provided an overview of Discord for our new members and guest.
For this month’s Tenets ‘n’ Techniques spotlight, Sharon J passed out a handout highlighting the resources available on the MQG website.
Show and Tell
Linda H @flourishingpalms shared the quilt she brought as an example for her bias tape workshop, Nocturne. This 26 x 39″ quilt features five different widths of machine appliqued bias tape, and was domestic machine quilted by Linda on her Bernina 770 QE. She also added big stitch quilting.

Monique F shared Hello Birdy. Monique improv pieced a variety of colorful birds to make this quilt top.

Monique’s second share featured colorful scrap blocks set in a bold black-and-white background.

JoElla M @jemquilter shared a 43 x 75″ quilt she created using the kawandi technique. JoElla used indigo shibori, recycled and manufactured Japanese fabrics. She hand-pieced and hand-quilted this project.

Mary W shared Purple, measuring 72 x 72″. Mary’s quilt features a border, a typically more traditional element, but she put a bit of a modern twist on it when she inserted a lighter block in the corner.

Program
This month’s program, Scraps!! To Process…or Not? was presented by Karen E. Karen shared a number of methods for preparing and storing scraps, and when you might choose not to do any pre-processing. She also shared a number of pictures and example quilts to show the many ways scraps can be used in modern quilting.
