September Meeting

Eighteen members of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild met on Saturday, September 7 at the New Life Christian Church in Wildwood. The meeting began at 9:30 am instead of our usual 10:00 am time, to allow those participating in the virtual workshop scheduled for the afternoon to return home to prepare.

Vice President Linda H led the meeting and reminded everyone that our dues for next year will be increasing from $40 to $50. Our costs have increased and the new amount will allow us to continue to participate in our various activities as we have in the past.

Past President Karen E reviewed the current Household Inspiration Challenge. Details can be found on the Members Only page of our website. Challenge projects will be revealed at the November 9 meeting. Remember to use the #householdinspirationchallenge tag if you share your progress on Instagram!

Karen also encouraged everyone to utilize the MQG resources available online. Access to a tremendous amount of materials is included with our membership, and Karen pointed out that we could each learn a great deal if we spend even one hour a week exploring those resources.

Cindy B shared an update on our CFMQG QuiltCon 2025 Community Outreach Challenge quilt. During last month’s sew-in, the quilt top was arranged. Work will continue at the sew-in on September 28. Tasks left include some work on the top, creating the backing, sandwiching, longarm quilting, and binding. Come to the sew-in or email Cindy if you would like to participate!

Linda H reminded everyone that supply lists for workshops can be found linked in the calendar on our website, as well as in our newsletter. Upcoming workshop and sew-in opportunities:

  • Registration is open for Illusion Quilt Design IN-PERSON NO-SEW workshop with Beth S: October 26 from 9 am – 12 pm at the Oxford Community Center. Cost is $20 per member and the class is limited to 20 participants.
  • Registration is open for Speed Date with Improv VIRTUAL workshop with Krista Hennebury: November 2 from 10 am – 5 pm. Cost is $55 and the class is limited to 20 participants.
  • Sew-In at Oxford Community Center: Full day on September 28 from 9 am – 3 pm.

Remember that you do not have to work on a project at a sew-in! Feel free to stop by to socialize and get to know fellow members. If you have not yet completed the Sew-in Survey sent out via email, please contribute your thoughts so that we can plan future sew-ins most effectively.

Upcoming programs include:

  • October 12th – Freezer Paper PiecingĀ with Beth S
  • November 9 – Household Inspiration Challenge Reveal

Patti R previewed how the November 9 reveal will work. Bring a completed Show and Tell form (there are a few available at meetings if you forget!) and an example or photo of your inspiration item. Projects will be revealed in random order. Reach out to Patti if you have any new items that could be used as prizes!

QuiltFest Jacksonville is approaching on September 19-21. This show will feature a Modern category for the first time, and 77 modern quilts will be on display. Among them will be six quilts made by CFMQG members Beth S, Linda H, Jane G, and Rosemary V.

This month’s Tenets ‘n’ Techniques spotlight was on the modern tenet “Improv.” Remember that improv can mean cutting fabric without rulers, but it can also mean assembling a quilt top without preconceived ideas. Next month’s tenet will be “Minimalism.” Please bring in examples of modern quilts featuring Minimalism!

Show and Tell

Betty S @zcabed shared Weave, a 65″ x 72″ quilt longarm quilted by a friend.

Betty S also shared Cherrywood, a 60″ x 60″ quilt that features fabric from Cherrywood Studios. Betty quilted this with a walking foot and talked about the huge numbers of threads she had to bury.

Karen E @sunrayatplay shared Chapters in the Circle of Life, a 65″ x 80″ quilt she made using The Clammy 12″ ruler to make circles. It features fabric from the “Root” collection by e bond as well as Moda Grunge. Karen quilted it on her Janome 9400.

This month’s program was a Demo Day organized by Peggy L. Members rotated through the following stations:
