August Meeting

Our August 10, 2024 meeting was attended by 24 members at the New Life Christian Church in Wildwood.

Our CFMQG Mission Statement: “The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”

President Rosemary V welcomed everyone with the reminder of our mission statement and a brief survey to explore members’ reasons for participating in our guild. She also announced our new Workshop Coordinator, Jennifer G.

We have two group quilt projects under way, and members who completed blocks for those quilts were able to turn in their contributions. Cindy B and Dee A are coordinating our CFMQG entry for the Community Outreach Challenge for QuiltCon 2025. Nearly all the blocks are finished! Cindy and Dee are hoping to have some volunteers that can spend an hour or two helping to lay the quilt out, cut the two corner blocks and create backing and binding from the leftover fabrics.  Cindy will bring all the materials to our next sew-in for anyone that would like to help out.

Jane G, Betty S, and Rosemary V are coordinating a group/bee quilt for entry into a future QuiltCon. If you picked up materials to participate, remember that your block for this quilt should be turned in by the September meeting.

Upcoming workshops and sewing opportunities:

  • Fabulous Curved Piecing VIRTUAL workshop with Cindy Grisdela: September 7 from 1 – 5 pm.
  • Registration is open for Illusion Quilt Design IN-PERSON NO-SEW workshop with Beth S: October 26 from 9 am – 12 pm at the Oxford Community Center. Cost is $20 per member and the class is limited to 20 participants.

Program Chair Jane G announced upcoming programs:

  • September 7th – Demo Day coordinated by Peggy L (Reminder: our meeting begins at 9:30 am that day)
  • October 12th – Freezer Paper Piecing with Beth S

Vice President Linda H recapped some of the MQG’s communications since our last meeting. Most notable was the pause on QuiltCon registration after issues encountered with the registration provider the day that registration opened. The MQG is planning to reopen registration in mid-August and has also communicated that they are working on plans so that they might be able to manage registration on their own in the future, hopefully avoiding problems like these. If you’re planning to go to QuiltCon, keep an eye out for further emails from the MQG!

Linda also reminded members that QuiltFest Jacksonville is being held from September 19 – 21. The show is featuring a Modern category for the first time, and this will be the largest category in the show. Beth S and Linda H will each have two quilts on display, and Jane G and Rosemary V will each have a quilt in the show as well.

Librarians Mary T and Karen T drew attention to our updated library policies, available on display at meetings and also at this link on our website.

Judy D reminded everyone about the Windham Ruby+Bee 2025 Fabric Challenge and has a local quilt shop willing to order the fabric for the challenge if there is any interest.

Rosemary V provided a breakdown of our CFMQG budget. The amount that we owe to the MQG for dues is increasing, and we have some additional costs such as rental fees for sew-in and workshop spaces that we did not have in the past. As a result, dues will increase to $50 next year – this is the first increase in CFMQG’s history, but still leaves our dues among the lowest of Florida MQG chapters.

At each meeting, there is a brief focus on a tenet or technique integral to modern quilting. This month’s installment of Tenets ‘n’ Techniques highlighted “High Contrast and Graphic Areas of Color.” Several members brought in examples (see the photo near the beginning of the blog post.) Next month’s meeting will highlight “Improvisational piecing,” so consider bringing an example of this with you in September!

Show and Tell

Donna P brought a tool that she wanted to share, the Seams Flat Pressing Bar from Maywood Studios. This wood and wool bar allows pressing of seams without pressing the surrounding areas and can also be used as a clapper.

Bonnie B @bonniequiltsaway shared Lighthouse Mystery, a 50″ x 82″ quilt that she made as part of the Summer Camp Modern Mystery Quiltalong from Modern Quilt Studio. After making the blocks, they were sliced and put back together with other blocks. Bonnie quilted this on a Janome Quilt Maker Pro 18.

Bonnie also shared Arpeggio, a 50″ x 70″ quilt started in a International Quilt Festival Houston class with Ruth Ann Berry. This quilt was made with a 60 degree 4.5″ ruler and has no y-seams. She also quilted this on a Janome Quilt Maker Pro 18.

Irene R shared a kawandi quilt she started in a recent workshop taught by Linda H. This quilt measures 22.25″ x 37.75″ and is hand sewn and quilted.

Program

This month’s program, Choosing a Category for Your Quilt, was presented by Jane G, filling in for Ardie W. It featured a video panel discussion from the MQG, focusing on the five subjective QuiltCon categories: Improvisation, Modern Traditionalism, Piecing, Minimalist Design, and Use of Negative Space. Example quilts were shown and discussion held about placement of these quilts into categories.
