January Meeting

Thirty-five people gathered on Saturday, January 10 for the monthly meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild. The meeting was held at the New Life Christian Church in Wildwood.

Co-President Lynette K welcomed attendees and read our purpose statement:

“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”

Membership Chair Dee A introduced our four visitors.

Lynette announced that the password to the Members Only area of the website has changed. She will send out another email to 2026 members with the new password.

We are in need of a nominating committee in preparation for our March election. The most pressing need the committee will address is finding a Vice President candidate, or co-Vice President candidates. If you are willing to serve on the nominating committee, or if you are interested in becoming Vice President, please let Co-Presidents Lynette K and Betty S know. The description of executive committee duties can be found in Article 9 of our bylaws.

Our regular meeting location is unavailable for our normal times in March and November. Alternative options will be explored; it’s possible that we may meet on different days those months.

Treasurer Sandi K provided an update on our finances and an explanation of how our dues to the MQG are calculated.

Vice President Linda H is developing a list of 2026 QuiltCon attendees. Make sure to let her know if you plan to attend! There will be a group photo taken with our Community Outreach quilt. Linda also reminded everyone that the QuiltCon awards ceremony is typically streamed online. The awards will be presented on Wednesday, February 18 at 7 pm.

Sew-in coordinators Beth S and Donna P announced that our next sew-in will be Saturday, January 24 at the Pinellas Library. The room is available from 9:30-4:45. The Sew and Learn topic will be discussed at 1 pm and will be about quilt legacies.

Program Coordinator Mel T will present the February program, Upcycling and Recycling. She will also announce our next challenge. Mel and Linda H will be working on programs for this year, and still have some open months. Please consider ideas for future programs and if you might be willing to present.

Workshop Coordinator Jane G sought input from members on workshops and programs. She passed out a hard copy of a survey and a survey was also sent out electronically following the meeting. Survey responses were collected and will be used to plan future workshop opportunities. Jane also shared an invitation from the South Sarasota MQG to join their upcoming workshops, String Theory and EPP Design Party. See their website for details.

Co-Librarians Peggy L and Karen T asked members to keep an eye out for books that might be a good addition to our library. We do have a small budget for library purchases. We also accept donations, as long as they are modern!

Media Coordinator Courtney S announced that all 2026 CFMQG members should have access to the Members Only area of our Discord server. Non-renewing members have not been removed from the entire server, but have been removed from the protected area. Please let Courtney know if you have mistakenly lost access to any channels. Courtney also takes member photos for our membership directory, so let her know if your photo is missing or you need a new photo taken.

Mel T provided an update on the collection of donated baby quilts. The Wildwood Police Department is willing to accept donations of quilts at any time. They often keep these items in their police cars and use them to provide comfort to kids in crisis.

Show and Tell

Serena B shared Roaring 20s, a 24 x 24″ quilt that was inspired by Louis Armstrong and photos of the dance halls of the 1920s. She made this tribute to 1920s jazz as part of the Designing Through the Decades Challenge. It features piecing, applique, and hand embroidery, and includes metal mesh fabric and metallic embroidery thread along with cotton fabrics. Serena quilted this original design on her domestic machine.

Beth S @blue_dragonfly5 shared the third quilt in her Illusion in Red series. This quilt measures 68 x 68″ and contains basic Road to California blocks arranged in an altered grid to create Beth’s original design. She used the quilt as you go method, dividing the quilt in half and then sewing the quilted halves together. Beth quilted this on her domestic machine using walking foot straight lines and serpentine stitch.

Betty S @zcabed shared a quilt featuring modern traditionalism and bold colors mixed with black and white. This quilt was quilted by Linda W.

Cindy B @cbubblesnsews shared Cinched, created using the Iberian Tile pattern by Catherine Redford from the January 2018 issue of Modern Patchwork. This quilt measures 48 x 54″ and was quilted by Cindy on her domestic machine.

Rosemary R created Newspaper, measuring 50 x 62.” Rosemary quilted this on her Pfaff, and this is the first quilt she’s quilted!

Mary W shared another first, My First Modern Trial. This quilt is the first modern quilt that Mary has ever made.

Program

Dee A and Barb A presented Stash: A Quilter’s Legacy. Inspired by the article Stash in the Hereafter by Diane Murtha from Quiltfolk, we asked ourselves the uncomfortable question – what will happen to our quilting things when we’re gone? Barb and Dee shared some suggestions and materials for getting organized and leaving clear information for others. Several other members also shared their plans or their stories of rescuing quilts.
