September Meeting

Twenty-eight people gathered at the New Life Christian Church on Saturday, September 13 for the monthly meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild.

President Betty S opened the meeting by encouraging a read-along of our purpose statement:

“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”

Gwen F welcomed everyone to the newly-renovated space, which is twice as big as before. It also features new technology, more bathrooms, and much more table space!

Dee A introduced our two visitors, both of whom decided to become members at the end of the meeting.

Mendi from The Village Quilt Shop in Fruitland Park delivered a short presentation spotlighting some of the fabrics and items they stock that might be of interest to modern quilters. The shop carries many solids and they are also open to sourcing various notions and materials upon request.

Treasurer Sandi K provided the current balance in our account.

Vice President Linda H brought up the issue of our proposed bylaws amendments, which was sent out to membership previously. Following a motion and second that we adopt the proposed amendments to the bylaws, the vote was favorable and the changes were adopted. These changes bring us into agreement with the current MQG bylaws.

Linda also reminded everyone that QuiltCon submissions are open until October 31, and we should all consider entering! Photo requirements have changed slightly for this year, so read the submission requirements carefully.

Next, Linda asked for feedback on whether we should continue the Tenets ‘n Techniques (TNT) feature each month. There was interest in continuing this educational spotlight on the different ideas behind modern quilting. We are looking for someone to step up to help with this each month, so please reach out to Linda if you are able to assist.

Betty announced that we have purchased an insurance policy for the guild.

Beth S and Donna P provided a sew-in update. The next sew-in will be on Saturday, September 27 at the Belleview Public Library from 10 am – 4 pm. The sew and learn topic is free motion quilting and lunch is apple cider braised pulled pork sliders ($3 donation requested if you choose to partake of lunch.) Register here or let Donna know via email or Discord if you plan to attend, so that she can plan the meal accordingly.

The October 25 sew-in will follow Beth’s workshop and will not start until 12 pm. The location for October is the Masonic Lodge in Wildwood.

Beth’s Transparency Quilt workshop does still have a few spots available. The cost is $20 and some supplies are required. The workshop is from 9 am – 12 pm at the Masonic Lodge in Wildwood. If you are attending, please make sure that you have the updated QuiltySolid app.

Judy D announced that registration is open for the Sleep at Home retreat. The retreat will be November 13-15 at the Salvation Army in Lecanto. The room is available from 8:30 am – 8 pm each day, and you can leave your sewing supplies in the locked room overnight. The cost is $75 and includes lunch. A link to more details can be found at the top of the Members Only page. Sign up in person at our October 11 meeting, or mail a check to Patti R (information in the link.)

Peggy L still has CFMQG merchandise available! She has colorful tie-dye shirts as well as hats and tote bags, and can also embroider the logo on other items.

Karen T and Peggy L shared a new book from the library on quilt backs.

There is still time to participate in the Designing Through the Decades Challenge, coordinated by Shloe K. Details can be found in a slide show on the Members Only page. The challenge reveal will be at the November 8 meeting.

Media Coordinator Courtney S reported that most members are on Discord, and gave a brief description of Discord for our visitors who signed up as members. Instructions for joining the Discord server can also be found on the Members Only page.

Sharon J and Barbara M are the Community Outreach quilt committee co-chairs, and reported that the quilt is nearly finished. Linda H recently domestic machine-quilted the center of the quilt, and members helped bury thread tails at the August sew-in. Karen E quilted the outer portion of the quilt, and Betty S will work on finishing the quilt edges next. The quilt can be submitted for QuiltCon on October 15.

Our Tenets ‘n Techniques feature for this month was Social Commentary. Quilts throughout the years have been designed to make a statement about some political, social, or cultural issue. Next month’s TNT topic is Quilts Made From Upcycled or Recycled Materials. Bring an example if you have one!

Show and Tell

Jane G @gonequiltinginflorida shared two quilts. The first was an improv quilt she created using scraps and leftover half rectangle triangles. She sliced the HRTs and recombined them with scraps. She ran into a challenge when the dye in the blue fabrics ran and stained the white fabric. No amount of color catchers or Synthrapol corrected the situation. Jane domestic machine quilted this herself.

Jane’s second quilt was an 80 x 80″ quilt she made using the Zen Chic Bauhaus pattern. This was longarm quilted by Pam P.

Barbara M shared her quilt, Book Nerd, measuring 55 x 66″ and quilted by Teresa K.

Janice T also shared two quilts. Too Many Scraps measures 45 x 52″ and was made using a pattern by Maryline Collioud-Robert. Janice learned about the pattern when Linda H brought it to retreat, and she decided that it would be a good way to use up scraps. Janice quilted this on her Bernina 770.

Janice’s second quilt was Opus #7. She also quilted this 47 x 50″ quilt on her Bernina 770.

Mel T shared Covid Crazy, an improv design she created by piecing 1.5″ strips into random-sized blocks. Mel quilted this herself.

Program

Lora D presented this month’s program on Modern Applique. Lora researched various types of applique and provided an overview of the technique for each type. She also found and presented several examples where creators shared their step-by-step creation of modern quilts using applique techniques, including some quilts that some of our members have seen hanging at QuiltCon.
