August Meeting

Twenty-six people gathered on Saturday, August 9 at the Oxford Community Center for the August meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild.

Vice President Linda H led the meeting, and opened with a welcome and reminder of the CFMQG Purpose statement:

“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”

Membership Chair Dee A introduced a visitor, who told us a little bit about herself.

Linda H recapped our postcard swap with the South Florida MQG. The last postcards have been received, with some kind gifts included from the SFMQG for those who waited for their postcards.

QuiltCon registration is nearing on August 20 at 10 am. Keep in mind that the most popular workshops often sell out in minutes, so be prepared to register immediately if you intend to sign up for workshops. Karen E recommended that you register for just your workshops first and complete that registration as quickly as possible. Then you can go back and add lectures later, because lectures generally do not sell out for quite some time, if at all. Some pricing has changed, so it would be a good idea to review the QuiltCon registration page linked above. At least 13 members have indicated they plan to attend QuiltCon 2026 in Raleigh!

Treasurer Sandi K provided an update on our finances.

Program Chair Mel T previewed upcoming meeting programs. In September, Lora D will present a program on applique.

Workshop Chair Jane G announced that Beth S is teaching a Transparency Quilt workshop on October 25 at the Masonic Lodge in Wildwood. The cost is $20 and spots are still available. Beth asked that attendees make sure they have downloaded the Quilty Solid app and that it has been updated recently.

Media Coordinator Courtney S announced that we now have very nearly the entire membership in our Discord server. There is an invitation link at the top of the Members Only page if you are not yet on Discord. We would love to see everyone in the group!

Sew-in Coordinators Donna P and Beth S provided an update on sew-ins. The Saturday, August 23 sew-in will be held at the Belleview Public Library. Lunch is a Greek orzo bowl and a $3 donation is requested if you plan to participate in the meal. The Show and Learn topic is rotary cutters, blades, and sharpeners.

We may be in need of some additional location options for 2026 sew-ins, due to a change in the library reservation policy. Please let Beth or Donna know if you have any ideas. They would also like your suggestions for future Show and Learn topics.

Patti R currently has two retreats planned. Our next retreat at Luther Springs will be from April 30 – May 3, 2026. There is also a Sleep at Home retreat planned from November 13 – 15, 2025 at the Salvation Army in Lecanto. This is a day retreat and costs $75, which includes lunches. The sewing room will be available from 8:30-4 each day, though Patti is exploring possible extended hours. The room will be locked until the next morning so that machines and supplies may be safely left out. Registration will open at the September 13 meeting.

Sharon J revealed our wonderful quilt top for the QuiltCon Community Outreach Challenge. The quilt will need to be entered promptly when submissions open on September 1. QuiltCon will take the first 80 submissions and later submissions will be waitlisted. Please make sure to send Sharon or Barbara M your hours worked if you contributed to the quilt.

Peggy L still has CFMQG merchandise available for sale. She also provided a quick update on the library.

Dee A is our new Sunshine Chair. Please let Dee know if someone is in need of a card to brighten their day. Several members received cards this month .

Other announcements included a congratulations to Shloe K, whose entry into the Cherrywood Challenge 2025 was accepted and will travel the country with the Squid Collection of quilts, including a stop at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. If you happen to attend a show where it’s displayed, Shloe would appreciate a photo of the display.

Linda H was contacted by a shop in Texas, Stitchin’ Heaven, which runs quilting cruises out of Miami. Let her know if you would like more information.

Show and Tell

Linda H @flourishingpalms shared her Japanese Rice Bag, a 6 x 6 x 6″ bag made from a free pattern on the Utah State University 4-H Extension website. Linda pieced the cotton and linen base with scrap patches, and then hand quilted kantha-style with Wonderfil Spagetti 12 wt cotton thread.

Janice T brought a quilt she made from the MQG’s Modern Block Sampler 2025 sew-along. While participating in the sew along, Janice pieced blocks from six designers from around the world. She turned her blocks into a 46 x 46″ quilt that she quilted on her Bernina 750.

Donna P brought two projects to share. The first was a serger cover featuring sashiko that she created as part of a paint chip challenge with another guild.

Donna’s second share was a bag she made using confetti fabric she learned to make in a class taught by Linda H.

Shloe K shared a bag that she improvised. She quilted it on her domestic machine. Shloe used this fabric as inspiration for decorating her sewing room, getting paint made to match!

Program

Mel T presented this month’s program, Demo Hack Day. Her exhibit included more than 80 items from the Dollar Store that could be useful in your sewing room (also known as your she-cave spa, according to Mel – everyone needs a spa day!) Mel had everyone laughing hard and lots of great ideas were shared. She even gave away all the items at the end of her presentation!
