April Meeting

Twenty-nine people, including three visitors, gathered on Saturday, April 12 at the New Life Christian Church in Wildwood for the April meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild.

New President Lynette K welcomed everyone and shared the Purpose statement:

“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”

Lynette thanked our outgoing President, Rosemary V, as well as our nominating committee, Gwen F and Betty S, for their service. Lynette introduced our new executive board and committee chairs:

  • Co-Presidents – Lynette K and Betty S
  • Vice President – Linda H
  • Co-Secretaries – Dee A and Anne G
  • Treasurer – Sandi K
  • Program Coordinator – Mel T
  • Workshop Coordinator – Jane G
  • Media Coordinator – Courtney S
  • Librarians – Peggy L and Karen T
  • Membership – Dee A and Donna P
  • Retreats – Patti R and Judy D
  • Sew-ins – Beth S and Donna P

Vice President Linda H made MQG-related announcements. The 2025 Sew Along is open for sign-ups, and kicked off April 17. The Selections from QuiltCon 2025 exhibit is launching this month with a first stop in Melbourne, Australia. Room blocks for QuiltCon 2026 in Raleigh will likely open in May, and rooms run out very quickly – be on the lookout for information and reserve a room immediately if you plan to go. Give a shout on Discord to let everyone know if you’re the first to see that rooms have become available! Finally, we have new business cards to share with others to promote CFMQG.

Media Coordinator Courtney S explained how to sign up for Discord. Discord is a messenger platform that can be used as an app on a phone or tablet, or on a webpage on the computer. There are two main steps to joining. First, you’ll need to sign up for a Discord account. Then, you’ll need an invitation to our server, which can be found near the top of the Members Only page. Once you accept the invitation by clicking on the link, you’ll soon receive permission to see the Members Only content in Discord. If this all sounds too complicated, before or after a meeting or the April sew-in are great opportunities to get in-person help! We are up to 28 members on Discord.

Beth S and Donna P reminded everyone that there is a sew-in April 26 at the Belleview Public Library. The show and learn topic is technology, so this is a great opportunity to get assistance with Discord, Instagram, EQ8, or any other technology topic. Please sign up here so that Beth and Donna have an estimate of the number of attendees. The meal will be assorted finger sandwiches.

Program Coordinator Mel T explained that there will be no May meeting, and our June meeting will be via Zoom because of construction at the church. The June program features Bea Byrne and is entitled, Kick Out Your Inner Critic and Make It! Mel is also accepting ideas for future programs, and is looking for members interested in presenting programs.

Treasurer Sandi K provided an update on our financial status. Dues have been paid to the MQG and she provided our current account balance.

Peggy L is offering embroidered CFMQG merchandise for purchase. She has hats, shirts, and totes available – some ready to buy during meetings, some available for order to be brought to the following meeting. You can also arrange custom orders with Peggy.

Retreat Coordinator Patti R reminded the group that retreat is approaching from May 9-12 at Luther Springs. Attendees may arrive as early as 8:30 am on Friday, and should return home by Monday after breakfast. Sew Modern Chicky is willing to provide a pop-up shop if enough people are interested, so please let Patti know. She would also like you to notify her of any food allergies, in addition to the medical form you provided.

Patti is also arranging a Sleep at Home retreat at the Salvation Army in Lecanto. This will be from November 13-15, from 8:30-4 each day. The room will be locked, so belongings can stay overnight. There is room for up to 30 members to attend.

Librarians Karen T and Peggy L provided a spotlight on one of the books available in the library. Check the list to see what else is available. Donations of modern materials to the library will be accepted.

Shloe K developed our current challenge, Designing Through the Decades. Details can be found on the Members Only page and the reveal will take place in November.

This month’s Tenet ‘n Techniques discussion topic was Alternative Grid.

Show and Tell

Lora D @loradouglas shared Shoofly, a 40 x 40″ baby quilt made using oversized churn dash blocks. It was longarm quilted by Joan G.

Lora D @loradouglas also shared Alliance, a 68 x 86″ quilt made using the Alliance Quilt pattern by The Athena Workshop on Etsy. This quilt was longarm quilted by Kimberley H.

Karen T @yorkie3mom created Just Swirl + Twirl, a 48 x 64″ quilt, with the Blue Onion pattern from Saginaw St Quilts and the Creative Grids Ovals All Ways ruler. She quilted it on her Janome 9450.

Janice T shared a very special quilt, Missy’s Quilt. Missy G was a CFMQG member that passed away unexpectedly in 2022. Among Missy’s things was this quilt top, measuring 45 x 45,” which Janice finished by quilting on her Bernina 750.

Janice T also brought her quilt Spiral. This 34 x 34″ quilt was made using the Chroma pattern by Taralee Quiltery. Janice bought this pattern after sitting next to it for several days at retreat! The original pattern creates a circular design, but Janice modified it, making it square. She quilted this on her Bernina 750.

Linda T @blu24berry also shared two quilts. The first was Summer Mystery, made during the Summer Camp Mystery Quilt Along by Modern Quilt Studio. It measures 50 x 82″ and was quilted by Linda on her Bernina 153.

Linda T’s second quilt was Australian Hexies, measuring 48 x 56″ and made using fabric she purchased in Australia in 2013 to make a bag. By adding some stash fabrics, she was able to create a quilt with it! Linda used the Jaybird Quilts Hex N More ruler and quilted this on her Bernina 153.

Anne G @anne.gould.35 shared Can You See the Flying Geese? Made with the Bonjour Quilts Colour Explosion pattern, it measures 36 x 47″ and was quilted by Anne on her Janome MC 8200.

Sharon J @seamrippersharon shared Max’s Stars, made using a custom Reulanach pattern from cloudquilting.com. These custom patterns replicate the starscape from a certain place and time, and Sharon’s quilt represents the stars from the location, date, and time of her godson Max’s birth. It was quilted by Cindy H.

Shloe K shared Through LOVE Quilt, made using the Through Love Quilt pattern by Taren Studios. The recipient of this quilt is an architect. Shloe suggests that anyone using this pattern print the pattern out in color, in order to keep track of the three colors – otherwise it gets confusing! It was quilted by Cindy H.

Program

This month’s program was a QuiltCon Review, led by Linda H with additional contributions from fellow attendees Anne G, Lynette K, and Sandi K. The presentation can be found on the Members Only page.

Postcard Swap

We are participating in “It’s a Small World,” a postcard swap with the South Florida MQG! Carol W brought examples and explained how to make a quilted postcard. Members who sign up to participate will receive mailing information for a South Florida member and will mail postcards on July 1. This would be a great project to work on at the April 26 sew-in, where Carol and Beth S will have some materials and equipment to share. We also have a Discord channel for discussion about the postcard swap.
