February Meeting

Our February 8 meeting was held at New Life Christian Church in Wildwood with 27 people in attendance, including three visitors.

President Rosemary V reminded everyone about the CFMQG Purpose Statement:

“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”

We recognized our CFMQG members who recently swept the awards in the Modern category at the Quilting Guild of The Villages Showcase of Quilts. Linda H received a 1st place ribbon and an NACQJ Award of Merit for Feelin’ Groovy, Betty S received second place for What’s Your Angle, Linda T received third place for Radiance, and Linda H also received an honorable mention and Judge’s Choice for Alternate Route. Congratulations!

Program Chair Jane G previewed our upcoming meeting programs:

  • March: Linda T with Modernizing a Traditional Quilt Pattern
  • April: QuiltCon 2025 Review with Linda H and Karen E and all other QuiltCon attendees

Linda T has requested that members bring examples of modern traditionalism for March’s meeting, so please consider whether you have something you could share.

Rosemary V discussed upcoming workshop opportunities. Beth S gauged interest in some options she proposed, and there will also be an opportunity to learn about and participate in a postcard swap. Stay tuned for more information!

Vice President Linda H reminded everyone that QuiltCon is swiftly approaching, and the awards ceremony will be streamed live on Wednesday, February 19 at 9 pm EST. The link can be found here (last year’s replay is currently located on this page, but it will be updated.)

Linda also shared information about Piecing Palooza 2025, an online workshop on March 20. She also shared that Cindy Grisdela posted a code for $20 off registration for this event, pp25cindy.

Media Coordinator Courtney S spoke about a new opportunity for discussion and networking for CFMQG members. Courtney, Linda H, and Rosemary V have been working on setting up a Discord server for our group. Discord is an app/website that offers the ability to chat while keeping things organized by topic, and also allows customizable notifications so that you don’t feel overwhelmed, like you might in a large group text. The first step is to either download the app or visit the website and create an account. Next, you will need an invite to our specific server, which can be found on the Members Only page of the website. If you aren’t sure how to use Discord, don’t worry! A generic guide can be found here, and a CFMQG-specific guide is upcoming. Technology is also going to be the discussion topic at a sew-in soon, and help is always available before and after regular meetings. Please consider giving this a try!

Nominating Committee Chairs Betty S and Gwen F announced that they have a slate of officers ready for March’s election. Thanks to all who have accepted nominations.

Retreat Coordinator Patti R shared information about retreat from May 9 – May 12 at Luther Springs. More information is coming soon and signups will begin in March. Patti and Judy D also described the Sleep-at-Home Retreats Patti has organized with the Friendship Guild. They are multi-day retreats held at the Salvation Army in Lecanto, with participants returning to their own homes in the evening. There was interest, so Patti will explore this option for our guild.

Rosemary V talked about a survey from YLI Threads. If we achieve 50% participation from members filling out the survey, our guild will receive gift cards. The three-minute survey was emailed out and must be completed by February 15.

Rosemary V also invited any interested members to attend the Executive Committee meeting on February 15th at 12:15 pm at the Belvedere Public Library, in Room 117.

February’s Tenets ‘n’ Techniques topic was Maximalism. Maximalism embraces a “more is more” attitude, combining many colors, prints, shapes, textures, etc.

Show and Tell

Gwen F @flaquiltz shared two quilts. Pineapple Delight measures 72 x 74″ and was longarm quilted by Pat B.

Gwen F @flaquiltz also shared an unnamed quilt measuring 52 x 52″. Gwen quilted this herself on her Bernina 750.

Jeanette M shared CYMK Circles, a 48 x 48″ quilt made using original machine applique. Jeanette used freezer paper to turn applique and used Superior monopoly invisible thread for the applique. The quilt has wool batting and was longarm quilted by Rod B, as well as stationary and hand quilted by Jeanette. The hand quilting was done with 8 wt Wonderfil Eleganza perle cotton.

Lynette K shared Purple Go ‘Round, which was created after taking a workshop on Fearless Curved Piecing with Cindy Grisdela. Lynette quilted this on her Janome 3200 in concentric circles. She added machine-stitched cats in the upper left corner, because the recipient loves cats.

Anne G @Anne.Gould.35 shared Improv Study I. This quilt measures 29 x 27″ and was also created after the workshop with Cindy Grisdela. Anne quilted this on her Janome Horizon MC8200.

Anne G @Anne.Gould.35 shared a second quilt, Sunshine, which measures 54 x 54″ and was made during the Seattle MQG 2024 Block of the Month, led by Louise Wackerman @imfeelincrafty. Anne quilted this on her Janome Horizon M8200 and the quilting features ruler work.

Linda H @flourishingpalms also created a quilt after participating in the Seattle MQG Block of the Month. Linda shared Like Totally, which measures 57 x 57″ and was quilted by Linda on her Bernina 770 QE. The free motion quilting design is called Labrinth, by Esther Frenzel @ipatchandquilt. Linda was trying to use up her stash and orphan blocks and the back is almost as interesting as the front, as a result!
