Twenty-nine members of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild met Saturday, July 20 at New Life Christian Church in Wildwood for our monthly meeting.

President Rosemary V welcomed everyone with a reminder of our purpose statement:
“The Guild supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.”
Gwen F announced that New Life Christian Church has plans to expand the building where we meet. This construction may cause some changes to upcoming meetings, such as temporarily moving to another location within the church property.
Dee A reminded everyone to wear name badges to meetings, if possible. If you don’t have one, you might consider making one!
Cindy B and Dee A provided an update on our Community Outreach Quilt for QuiltCon. A design has been developed and they have worked on figuring out colors and yardage. A small group is meeting on Monday to begin cutting fabric. They plan for each contributor to create a strip, and the strips will be assembled to create the quilt top.
Rosemary V shared another opportunity for a group quilt. This effort is organized by Rosemary V, Jane G, and Betty S and the quilt will be entered in the Group or Bee Quilts category at an upcoming QuiltCon. Fabric was available as well as instructions for assembling a block. These blocks should be given to Betty S by September 14.
Upcoming workshops and sewing opportunities include:
- Kawandi IN PERSON workshop with Linda H: July 27 from 9 am to 12 pm
- Fabulous Curved Piecing VIRTUAL workshop with Cindy Grisdela: September 7 from 1 – 5 pm
- Sew-in on July 27 from 12 – 3 pm at the Oxford Community Center
Upcoming meeting programs:
- August 10th: Choosing a Category for Your Quilt with Ardie W
- September 7th: Demo Day coordinated by Peggy L (reminder: this meeting will begin at 9:30 am)
Vice President Linda H had several announcements. If you would like to change the frequency of emails you are receiving from the MQG, there was an email sent on Thursday (subject line: MQG Communications) with instructions on how to change your email settings.
Linda also reminded everyone to make sure you know how to log into your MQG account, because QuiltCon registration opens at 10 am on Wednesday, July 31. Workshops sell out very quickly – sometimes within a couple of minutes!
If you’ve made a temperature quilt and are interested in participating in a research survey, please let Linda know. She will forward you the survey from Tracey Clement.
The bylaws have been updated on the website to reflect the changes we voted on during the June meeting.
The Lake County Quilters Guild is holding their 41st Annual Fantastic Quilt Show on November 15 and 16 at the Venetian Center in Leesburg.
Gwen F announced that you should contact her if you would be interested in participating in a group order of our CFMQG fabric from Spoonflower.
IMPORTANT: We are still looking for a workshop coordinator. If we don’t have a coordinator in place by August 1, we will not be able to offer workshops in 2025.
Our holiday party will be December 14 at the Oxford Community Center. We will need some members to arrive early to set up tables and decorate – please consider volunteering to help! Members are also encouraged to make something for the optional gift exchange, although you may still bring a purchased gift.
There will be an executive committee meeting from 12:30 – 2:30 pm during the Sew-in on July 27. There is a Zoom executive committee meeting on August 1 to discuss the budget.
Show and Tell
There was a brief group Show and Tell of quilts demonstrating the MQG tenet “Bold use of color.”

Donna P @donnapquilts shared a 60 x 78″ quilt called Family Jewels. Donna began this quilt as part of our 2023 CFMQG Challenge. She used the Diamonds on Display quilt pattern by Heather Black @quiltachusetts and a Bloc Loc Half-Rectangle Triangle ruler. Donna quilted this on her domestic Brother and sashiko machine, using rulers and artist painters’ tape.

Linda H @flourishingpalms shared Infrastructure, a 66.5 x 72″ quilt. Linda started this quilt during a Large Scale Minimal Improv workshop with Ashelyn Downs at QuiltCon 2024 in Raleigh, although the quilt isn’t minimal. Linda instead added design elements. Fabrics are not only cotton, but linen and her husband’s blue jeans, and she added kumquat accents. Linda quilted this on her Bernina 770 QE using walking foot, ruler, and free motion quilting, and she also added big stitch hand quilting with #8 perle cotton!

Mel T shared Florida Dream. Mel used Brenda Gael Smith’s Dreamlines and quilted this on her Bernina. Interestingly, this quilt features both binding AND facing!

Janice T shared Double Trouble, a 68 x 68″ quilt using the Finger Paints pattern by Quilt Fort Co. She found this quilt a challenge to quilt at an angle, which she did on her Bernina 750. She used lots of spray basting to make the machine quilting easier. She then added big stitch hand quilting, but found that the spray basting made this more difficult.

Janice T’s second share was Unfounded Colonies. This quilt measures 50 x 66″ and used the United Colors pattern by Blue Nickel Quilts. Janice made this quilt to sample a quilting pattern that she planned to use on her Double Trouble Finger Paints quilt. She also quilted this on her Bernina 750 and added big stitch quilting.

Janice T also shared a 50 x 60″ quilt called The Damn Clammy. This quilt used Latifah Saafir’s Clammy ruler and YouTube directions. Janice also quilted this on her Bernina 750.

Janice T’s final quilt was Open Door. Janice made this quilt for a living program in Venice, FL that provides a home for mothers in need. Her design inspiration came from a Curated Quilts cover. Open Door was longarm quilted by Becky Adama in Venice.

Program
Betty S presented the program, Fabulously Fused. Betty used information from Sue Bleiweiss’ Fabulously Fused Modern Quilts webinar (available in the MQG Resource Library) and shared different fusible materials and ideas for how to use them in modern quilts. The presentation heavily featured the product Mistyfuse, and Betty followed her program with an opportunity to test this product on sample swatches.
