June Meeting

Thirty-one members of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild met at New Life Christian Church in Wildwood on Saturday, June 8.

There are several upcoming workshops and sewing opportunities:

  • Kawandi IN PERSON workshop with Linda H: July 27 from 9 am to 12 pm ($20)
  • Fabulous Curved Piecing VIRTUAL workshop with Cindy Grisdela: September 7 from 1 – 5 pm, limited to 24 participants ($35)
  • Sew-In at Oxford Community Center: June 22 from 9 am – 3 pm. We will be joined by Barb A and her 4-H members as they determine their quilts with the assistance of Beth S. They will use one area of the Center, leaving plenty of space for others to attend and chat!

Please note: to allow people enough time to return home after the September 7 regular meeting and participate in the virtual workshop, our regular meeting that day will begin at 9:30 am.

Upcoming programs for our next two meetings:

  • July 20th (note change of date): Fabulously Fused with Betty S
  • August 10th: Choosing a Category for Your Quilt with Ardie W

Cindy B provided an overview of the QuiltCon 2025 Community Outreach Challenge. The MQG has specified a color palette and a theme of Lines and Bars. Cindy is collecting a list of those interested in helping and is asking for ideas on patterns, division of labor, etc. Dee A volunteered to co-chair with Cindy – thanks to them both for stepping up to ensure we will have a quilt for charity this year!

Linda H provided a recap of information shared in the MQG’s recent emails. The MQG is launching an online community, which will allow members to connect and share with each other. Make sure you know how to log in on the MQG’s website, and also make sure that your affiliation is set to CFMQG so that you will be placed in our specific community group as well!

QuiltCon 2025 workshop signups will open July 31st at 10 am. If you are hoping to attend a workshop at QuiltCon, remember that some workshops fill immediately. You’ll want to visit the QuiltCon page to explore workshop options in advance and consider logging in prior to 10 am so that you can sign up quickly if you are interested.

Quilt Label Week is June 17 – 22. The MQG wants us to share how we label our quilts! Use #labelmyquilts on Instagram when sharing photos of quilt labels.

The 2024 MQG Make-A-Difference Challenge is ongoing. There is still time to make an entry to submit in August.

Rosemary V and Linda H explained some proposed changes to our bylaws. The members present voted unanimously to accept these changes. The current bylaws can be found here, with a summary of the amendments found at the end of the document.

We have a number of committee chair positions that we need to fill. Please see Rosemary’s June Newsletter (sent June 2nd) for links to descriptions of positions and information about how to apply!

Show and Tell

Deanna A @gdeeallen2021 shared her quilt made using the Amplified quilt pattern from Missouri Star Quilt Co. Dee used big stitch quilting for the first time on this quilt, and utilized machine binding.

Linda H @flourishingpalms shared Plus, a 40.5″ x 54″ quilt made as part of an Instagram and blog quiltalong with Jeni Baker @jenib320. Jeni’s pattern is the Arithmetic Quilt and the quilting design is an all-over pattern shared on Instagram by Esther Frenzel @ipatchandquilt. Linda quilted this on her Bernina 770QE and will donate this quilt to the Children’s Home Society of Florida.

Patti R @pattirose6 shared her 33″ x 33″ quilt, Blue Onion. She used the Blue Onion pattern by Saginaw Street Quilt Company. Patti reduced the pattern by 50% to create a wall hanging, and she was inspired by Mike’s Blue Onion at our Luther Springs retreat. She quilted this with a walking foot on a Janome M7.

Program

The program was Quilty Solid: An App for Color Fans, presented by Courtney S. We watched a portion of Steph Skardal’s MQG webinar, explaining the use of her free Quilty Solid app. Following the video, we worked through several scenarios to practice useful functions of the app. The slides from this program can be found on the Members Only page (reminder: the password for this page has changed and can be found in a previous email from Rosemary.)
