We’re proud of two Central Florida MQG members who recently participated and won the MQG’s “Use It: Quilt Back Challenge.”
In a November 6 “Modern Monday” email, sign-ups were offered to all members who wanted to join-in. The idea behind the challenge was to invite MQGers to use what was already in their sewing room – orphan blocks, leftover parts of projects, scraps, and the like – to piece a quilt back for a particular quilt top, or for a future quilt.
Beth – follow her on Instagram at @blue_dragonfly5 – made her 45″ X 55″ quilt back for the Dreamlines quilt she made this year.

Here’s what Beth had to say about this backing:
The back was made from leftover pieces of patchwork from constructing the front. All the small pieces were assembled by color to form a square or rectangle block then set into a matching color vertical stripe. The vertical stripes of the back are reversed from the front in placement so when the quilt is sandwiched the color of the back will match the same color on the quilt front.
Following monthly prompts (January through October) in an online quilt-along led by Brenda Gael Smith, this is the Dreamlines quilt top Beth pieced.

Linda – follow her on Instagram @flourishingpalms – made a 60″ X 92-1/2″ quilt back for her Summer Camp Modern Mystery Quiltalong quilt top, pieced during an along with Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr at Modern Quilt Studio.

Linda says:
I used several orphan blocks from the Summer Camp Modern Mystery quilt along (see in center), and some Dreamlines components, among other bits. Yep, I fizzled-out on Dreamlines after several months. Making this backing was a good exercise for me because I unearthed more orphan blocks and parts than I expected! Now I’ve found enough parts for at least two more large quilt backs!
This is the “arrowhead” layout of Linda’s Summer Camp Modern Mystery Quiltalong top for which she pieced the backing.

Eight winners in the “Use It: Quilt Back Challenge” were announced in the MQG’s “Modern Monday” email on December 18.
