October Meeting

Thirty-two members (including one brand-new member!) and two guests attended the October 14 meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild.

The program was a webinar from the MQG website, Using Simple Quilt Blocks to Create a Complex Geometric Design by Corinne Sovey. In the webinar, Corinne explained her design process and how she uses color and simple block designs to bring together more complicated and visually interesting final products. The webinar, along with numerous others, is available to members who log in on the Modern Quilt Guild website and visit the MQG Resource Library.

Show and Tell

Cindy @cbubblesnsews shared a 65″ x 72″ quilt called Blowing Dandies, made using the Hunter’s Star Ruler by Deb Tucker. Cindy free-motion quilted this on a domestic machine.

Betty @zcabed shared her quilt, Campfire (Summer Camp). It measures 55″ x 78″ and was made during the Summer Camp mystery quiltalong by Modern Quilt Studio. Campfire (Summer Camp) was quilted by Susan W.

Kay’s quilt, Cotton Candy Shop, measures 49″ x 64″ and was a pattern by Connie Kauffman in the March/April 2023 issue of Quiltmaker magazine. Kay quilted this on her HQ Sweet 16.

Beth @bluedragonfly5 shared Illusions, a 52″ x 52″ quilt of original design. Beth created her design on EQ8, altering a grid to create different-sized blocks. She quilted it using a walking foot on a Viking Sapphire domestic machine, creating a spiral pattern. Illusions has wool batting and a corded binding.

JoElla @jemquilter shared a 96″ x 96″ quilt called Blimey! Pinwheels. This quilt was made using the Pinwheels free-form block from the book Cultural Fusion Quilts: A Melting Pot of Piecing Traditions by Sujata Shah. JoElla quilted it using a tack stitch on her Janome 6700P.

JoElla also shared her Dresden Plate Table Runner, which measures 22″ x 104.” She used a template from Simply Modern Magazine Issue 33, page 104. JoElla hand quilted this piece.

Choose Your Own Challenge

The deadline is approaching for the CFMQG “Choose Your Own Challenge” – the due date/reveal is November 11. Quilts should be a minimum of 20″ x 20″ and there are four options, of which you may choose one or more:

  • Sustained and Repurposed: at least 70% of the quilt should be of repurposed fabric
  • Two-Colors: two colors must be 90% of the quilt. Up to 10% may include a third color, for accents in piecing and/or thread
  • Half-Rectangle Triangles
  • Color of the Year: the color of the year (either Pantone’s Viva Magenta, or Kona’s Crush) and similar colors must comprise 70% of the quilt, unless used in combination with a two-color quilt option, in which it must be 50%.
