We were delighted to welcome 32 people to our Saturday morning meeting at New Life Christian Church.

Two new members – Judy and Debbie – introduced themselves, and we welcomed one guest.

The meeting program was 100 Days of Modern Quilting.
What might you do if you set yourself to intentionally create for 100 consecutive days? Or 60 days? Or 30 days? Would you build in vacation time? Or give yourself time off?
Some makers have chosen to begin their “100 days” leading up to QuiltCon. If so, you’ll want to begin Monday, November 13 for QuiltCon Raleigh, February 22-25, 2024.

Maybe you’ll decide to take on a new-to-you technique such as English paper piecing; foundation paper piecing; applipiecing; hand piecing, or tiny piecing. Maybe you’d take up hand stitching. Or you might domestic machine quilt different quilting patterns.

In the presentation, we saw many examples that might or might not suit you. Members who weren’t able to attend the meeting can view the presentation on our Members Only page.
Also, check out information about “100 Days” on the MQG website, in the Resources Library. See some creations at this Instagram hashtag: #100daysofquilting
Everyone is invited to create their own “100 Days” (even if it’s not for 100 days), and bring them to future meetings to share. We’ll have a “100 Days Moment” at each meeting so you can let us know what you’ve been inspired to try; what you’re doing; when you’re starting; and how long you’re aiming to stick with it – or giving yourself permission to not follow-through, if it’s not working for you.
Mostly, we’re all looking forward to seeing what one another is doing, and sharing our ideas. Are you in?!

JoElla shared this striking Helios and Anthos quilt, an original design she made according to the Modern Quilt Guild’s definition of Maximalism – a new tenet that was added in April.
She watched a video presentation by Irene Roderick @hixsonir and then intentionally followed guidelines that make a quilt maximalist. MQG members: Go to this link for information about maximalism and to watch the video JoElla watched.

JoElla use fabrics from the “Root” collection by eBond for Free Spirit Fabrics, some Kaffe Fassett, and a couple Walmart and JoAnn prints to piece and appliquĂ© this 42½” X 43½” (L) quilt. Quilting is blanket stitch on her Janome 6700P machine.
Linda shared this 57″ X 66″ improv quilt she calls Alternate Route. She began making it in April during a two-session virtual workshop with Irene Roderick @hixsonir. In the Two Step: Dancing with the Wall workshop, students were encouraged to work with only two fabrics, though one or two additional colors could be added.

She used Patriot (blue) and Sachet (pale lavender) Painter’s Palette solids to machine piece her quilt. Leftover blocks and fabrics were used to piece a backing. Domestic machine quilting was done on her Bernina 770QE. Big stitch hand quilting was added using size 8 perle cotton and six-strand embroidery floss.

Members are reminded that it’s not too late to start making a quilt for the CFMQG “Choose Your Own Challenge.” The deadline for completion is November 11, 2023.
Your quilt can be as small as 20″ X 20″ (or larger, of course!).
As you wish, choose from one of these four options, or combine two or more:

- Sustained and Repurposed: at least 70% of the quilt should be of repurposed fabric
- Two-Colors: two colors must be 90% of the quilt. Up to 10% may include a third color, for accents in piecing and/or thread
- Half-Rectangle Triangles
- Color of the Year: the color of the year (either Pantone’s Viva Magenta, or Kona’s Crush) and similar colors must comprise 70% of the quilt, unless used in combination with a two-color quilt option, in which it must be 50%.

The challenge DUE DATE and REVEAL is Saturday, NOVEMBER 11, 2023.
For more information, and to view the presentation about this challenge, go to the Member’s Only page of this website.

While you’re on the Member’s Only page, check out our Membership Directory. We’ve been working hard to include a photo of every member alongside her contact information. If your photo isn’t yet there, Courtney and Linda are looking for you!
Note: Your personal information and photo will never be shared outside our chapter. It’s intended only as a way to get to know one another better.
