July 8 Meeting

The July 8 meeting of the Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild was attended by 29 people, including one visitor and one new member.

Show and Tell

Linda H @flourishingpalms shared her finished 16″ x 16″ quilt, made from a Matchstick Quilting virtual workshop with Cassandra Beaver @cassandra.beaver on June 17, 2023. Linda used Cassandra’s printed panel from Spoonflower and Aurifil thread in weights #50, #28, and #12 with her Bernina 770QE.

JoElla M @jemquilter also attended Cassandra Beaver’s virtual workshop. JoElla used matchstick quilting to create a plaid background, and then appliqued floral designs using Wonder-Under fusible web. She quilted these pieces on her Janome 6700P.

Beth S @blue_dragonfly5 shared two items. The first was an 18″ x 74″ table runner, WaterColor. Beth started this during a virtual Watercolor workshop with Carolina Oneto @carolina_oneto from Brazil. WaterColor features color gradations – a gradation of values in the yellow and blue end sections, and a gradation of hue from yellow-green to blue-green throughout the piece. Beth quilted this using a walking foot and a twisted ribbon design.

Beth’s second share was River’s Edge, a 38″ x 44″ quilt started in a sew-along on Instagram by Nicholas Ball @quiltsfromtheattic. Beth discussed the challenge of putting this quilt together, resulting from the different-size improv triangle blocks. She quilted this with a walking foot in a 1.5″ diamond grid pattern, with a section of .75″ grid as an accent.

Dana D @msddunham also shared two projects. The first was Mid-Century Modern Baby, a 35″ x 39″ original design. This quilt features big stitch details and hand-appliqued motifs, and the machine quilting was done on her Bernina Q20.

Dana’s second quilt, Sunrise at the Beach, measures 93″ x 91″ and is improv inspired by the work of Jo Avery @joaverystitch. This quilt was longarm-quilted by Donna L-M.

Betty S @zcabed shared What’s Your Angle?, made as a result of Karen E.’s “What’s Your Angle?” workshop in April. Betty quilted this on her domestic machine.

Make sure to continue to use the new Show and Tell form for future meetings! It was updated in April to reflect the most recent descriptions of modern quilting from the MQG.

Program

Our program was on Maximalism, a “more-is-more” philosophy that has emerged as a trend in modern quilting. Next year’s QuiltCon in Raleigh will include a Maximalist Exhibit. If you missed the program, the MQG website has several resources that provide information about Maximalism. Read the article “Maximalism in Modern Quilting,” view the On Demand Education – Maximalism! video, or try the Maximalist Mini Tutorial to learn more.
