June 10 Meeting

Thirty-one people attended our Saturday morning meeting at New Life Christian Church in Wildwood. Two were visitors.

After a brief discussion about Maximalism, a tenet that has been newly-added to the MQG’s description: What is Modern Quilting? everyone is looking forward to our July 8 meeting when Maximalism will be our presentation topic.

Donna P @donnapquilts made What’s Your Angle? as a result of Karen E.’s April “What’s Your Angle?” workshop. Donna’s quilt is 20-1/2″ X 20-1/2″. She used Quilter’s Rule Circle rulers and her Sashiko machine for quilting, adding hand stitching with chunky thread. The quilt has a faced finish.

Alice S @aliceannsmith was also a student in Karen’s workshop. She quilted Angles, a 12″ X 12″ quilt on her Bernina 770.

JoElla M @jemquilter began this 19″ X 34″ Kawandi (her first) while on retreat. She used upcycled fabrics, including Australian prints with Kiwis, to create her design. It is entirely hand-stitched.

Rosemary V @franticquilter shared three finishes. The first quilt is Jewel, 54″ X 76″. The second quilt is Strippy Stairways, 60″ X 76″. Both quilts are patterns by GE Designs made with a Stripology ruler. Together, they were made with 12 half-yard cuts of fabric, with the smallest scraps used to make four placemats. Rosemary quilted them on her Bernina Q16.

Ardie @fatquarteraddict made two quilts with a freezer paper technique. All Kinds of Angles is 48″ X 49″ and Needles and Thread is 48″ X 60″. Both were quilted by Ardie on her HQ longarm.

NOTE: Ardie will teach a “Large Scale With Freezer Paper” workshop on September 23. Members can register and pay $20 for the workshop beginning at our July 8 meeting.

Mel is holding a quilt made by her mother, Janice. It’s New Additions, a pattern by Kelly Marshall of Simply Mackbeth. The quilt is 40″ X 40″ and was quilted by Janice.

L Kay R shared her 38″ X 49″ Arrows quilt, a design she saw on Pinterest. She quilted it on her HandiQuilter Sweet 16.

Going forward, members are reminded to use the new Show and Tell form – revised in April when the MQG updated tenents.

If you missed our June 10 program – Create Your Own Challenge – it is available on this website. Go to “Members Only,” enter our password; the presentation is at the top of the page. Every member is strongly encouraged to join our challenge, due November 11.

Also, while in Members Only, be sure to note that our directory has been updated and now includes photos of members. We will continue to work to capture the 18 remaining members who need to be photographed.

June Activities Coming Up

Next Saturday, June 17, from 9 AM to noon, some of our Central Florida MQG members are taking a virtual Matchstick Quilting workshop with Cassandra Beaver. We’ll be joined by others from the Jacksonville MQG and South Florida MQG, for a total of 23 workshop participants. Thank you President Karen for arranging this wonderful joint-workshop opportunity!

The following Saturday, June 24 is our monthly Sew-In from 9 am to 4 pm at the Oxford Community Center. Bring whatever you want to work on, and lunch if you wish (some of us like to go across the street to Pho Saigon), and stay for fun and conviviality!
