The Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild met Saturday, April 8, with 34 members and one visitor in attendance. Show and Tell was followed by a program entitled SUSTAINED AND REPURPOSED: Using Upcycled Fabrics in Your Quilts.
Show and Tell
Joella shared her quilt inspired by Cindy Grisdela’s book Adventures in Improv.

Anne, a visitor, shared several pieces that she made as part of this year’s Color Collective @_color_collective project from Tara Faughnan and Sewtopia. The Color Collective is a six- or seven-month subscription that provides curated fabric and a monthly block pattern. Anne also shared a quilt top made using the Finger Paints pattern by Laura Loewen of Quilt Fort Co.

Beth @blue_dragonfly5 and Judy also shared work from the Dreamlines project. Dreamlines is by Brenda Gael Smith @brendagaelsmith and sends subscribers a free monthly linear design. A number of CFMQG members have subscribed, and it’s interesting to see everyone’s choices of colors and personal creative touches!

Program
The program, SUSTAINED AND REPURPOSED: Using Upcycled Fabrics in Your Quilts, was all about how to repurpose fabrics for use in quilts – old shirts, denim from jeans, bedsheets, vintage fabrics, you name it! Repurposing fabrics helps cut back on waste going to landfills, and can be a wonderful way to incorporate fabrics with sentimental value into a keepsake. A number of quilts at QuiltCon this year included repurposed fabrics!
The presentation included photographs of quilts by Beth @blue_dragonfly5 and Karen @sunrayatplay that include repurposed fabrics, as well as many examples from social media.
In addition, several members brought quilts to show in person. Alice shared a quilt made with denim from jeans, which still had pockets, belt loops, and labels present.
Irene @riedmanirene shared a quilt top made of fabric cut from a career’s worth of bold and colorful nursing scrubs.

Linda @flourishingpalms shared a kawandi piece made using her grandmother’s vintage fabrics.
