CFMQG met for their monthly meeting on February 11th. The education component was Modern Traditionalism providing lots of discussion opportunities to evaluate what block was used, how it was changed and how the overall design became Modern. Gwen, Beth and Linda brought in their version of Modern Traditionalism. Check out the negative space, elongated blocks, missing components of Traditional blocks.

Announcements from the February meeting provided a variety of reminders including the Sumter County Baby Shower benefiting Healthy Families Florida on February 23, 4:30 to 6:30 at the Sumter County Fairgrounds in Bushnell. More baby quilts were donated at Saturday’s meeting as well as burp cloths from the 4-H club. The burp cloths are a great addition to this event for new mother’s. A huge thank you to our young sewers!

There were 37 members in attendance on Saturday. An important change for the March meeting was announced. Please take note, the start time will be at 1 PM on March 11th. The meeting will be a review of QuiltCon. There are 24 members going to Atlanta for QuiltCon, many for the first time. Members will be presenting the educational component of the show on March 11th. While at QuiltCon they are asked to take three photos of quilts and the artist information to share, including their personal choice for People’s Choice. Those attending QuiltCon were reminded to mark their calendar for a 4:15 group photo and 5:00 for the All Florida MQG Meet-Up, both on Friday. Those not attending QuiltCon were reminded to check the “hashtag” QuiltCon2023 on Instagram.
Our Charity Outreach Quilt from 2022 was donated to New Life Christian Church in recognition for the use of their facility and equipment. New Life will include the quilt in a live auction event the last Saturday of March. Auction monies collected provide dollars to assist with the efforts of Rapha International providing aftercare for survivors of human trafficking, sexual exploitation and abuse in vulnerable communities.

The meeting also included Show and Tell! Bonnie @bonniequiltsaway shared a quilt that was offered through Bernina Sew Along, the pattern by Haley Grzych. It measures 90 by 90 and is called PASSA FLORA. Bonnie quilted it herself on her Janome QMP18. She added a 6 inch border with a multicolor binding to allow it to fit her bed. She said she learned a lot while quilting it.

Ardie @fatquarteraddict shared A TWIST OF LIME measuring 48 by 60. Ardie participated in a virtual workshop with Daisy Aschehoug @warmfolk offered through CFMQG on Giant Nested Circles. Ardie likes lime green and used her scraps and Daisy’s rulers to make this quilt. Quilted on Ardie’s Handiquilter.

Mike @maltedmik shared her quilt from the Thinking Outside the Pattern Challenge where members were asked to explore the MQG website and make their own variation of either a block, pattern or utilize some other modern design options. Mike named her quilt STRIP TEASE which measures 49 by 56. This is her own design based on STAGGERED LINES by Megan Callahan @wholalacrafts and quilted on her Janome 8900.

Lynette @netsclay shared her BUNNY LOVE, a block of the month quilt. Lynette quilted it on her machine and will be donating this to Healthy Families Florida.

JoElla shared her PURPLE HAZE measuring 23 by 23. This quilt used improv curved piecing on wool felt. Sewing on wool felt is like sewing on butter, so very smooth JoElla tells us. There is quilting in the ditch using embroidery stitches completed by JoElla.

Char shared this 50 by 50 AFRICAN VIBE which was pieced in improv style and utilized ombres and African prints. Quilted by Pat Barry on a long arm.

Janice and her daughter Mel @snomelt decided to participate in the mini challenge with #notgoingtoQuiltCon that included three rules: only three fabrics, (pre-selected), no rotary cutter and solids only. These were quilted on their Berninas. It was quite the challenge but a fun weekend activity while they attended the Airing of the Quilts 2023 with the Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild. This event occurs every year with the 2024 event scheduled February 3, 2024. Janice and Mel call their quilts IT’S A THISTLE and IT’S A FLOWER.

Enjoy QuiltCon for those attending. Don’t forget to take photos. And remember to mark your calendar for the change of time to 1 PM for March 11th, our next meeting. Keep Calm and Make Modern!
