October 8 Meeting: Heated with Temperature Quilts

We had a great turn-out for our Saturday, October 8 meeting with 35 members and one guest in attendance! Whether it was the wonderful Show and Tell quilts that were shared or our program about Temperature Quilts, it was wonderful to see so many quilter-friends.

Show and Tell

Barb showed her 60″ X 76″ Interlinked quilt, a pattern by Christa Watson @christaquilts. She made it using solid colors that represent birthstone colors for her daughter-in-law, son, and two grandsons, and gave it to her daughter-in-law for her birthday. It was quilted by another member, Pam, on Pam’s longarm machine.

Jane made an abbreviated version of Twisted Geese a pattern by Zen Chic @zenchicmoda. She used a mix of Cherrywood and Art Gallery fabrics, a variety of Aurifil thread colors, and a walking foot on her domestic machine to make this 38″ X 44″ quilt.

Mel

Janice (aka Mamacita) showed three quilts, all of which she quilted on her Bernina 750 domestic sewing machine.

Broken Wheels is a 56″ square quilt Janice made as a result of participating in our June, 2022 “Giant Nested Circles” virtual workshop with Daisy Aschehoug @warmfolk.

This 50″ X 66″ quilt, called Color Play is Janice’s version of @bluenickelstudios “United Colors” pattern. In addition to machine quilting, Color Play is also big stitch hand quilted.

Garden Path is a quilt Janice pieced during our recent (September) CFMQG retreat. The pattern is “Low Tide” by @sewnwyoming.

Dana made Emily’s Picnic using the “Picnic Petals” pattern by Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill @wholecirclestudio. Dana modified the pattern by adding appliquĂ© shapes and other embellishments. She quilted this 67″ X 84″ quilt on her Bernina Q20.

Dana’s quilt back has the words to one of her favorite poems.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

Temperature Quilts Program

Our program about Temperature Quilts was presented by Linda and President Karen.
Linda shared the how-tos of making a temperature quilt, from choosing a quilt block and selecting fabrics, to determining where to find temperature information and how to keep track of fabrics and temperatures.
Karen shared pictures and information about how each maker made her temperature quilt as seen in the special Temperature Quilt display at QuiltCon 2022 in Phoenix.

Following the program, four members who have made temperature quilts shared theirs:
1 – Karen
2 – Janice
3 – Beth
4 – Linda

More information about how to make a Temperature Quilt can be found on the MQG website under “MQG Resource Library.” A webinar – (Linked here) The Highs and Lows of Temperature Quilts was presented in January 2021 by Jo Avery, Karen Foster, and Linda Hungerford.
