CFMQG announces the second challenge for 2022. Not to worry, the reveal date will be January 14, 2023.
The Challenge: “Thinking Outside the Pattern”
In January 2022, Jane @gonequiltinginFlorida shared a quilt that was inspired by the pattern Positive Influence by Stacey Day. Jane made it her own. The pattern is on the left, Jane’s quilt on the right.

Often we look at things and try to imagine how it might look different. This challenge is designed to put that imagination to work as well as explore the MQG website and resources. Below are the specifics to the challenge!
The Objective:
- To become more acquainted with all the free resources available to us as members on the MQG website
- To become more familiar with and/or to utilize ways we can change patterns to make our own customized variation of that pattern
The challenge parameters:
- Use a “Quilt of the Month” pattern or “Block Study” on the MQG website as your inspiration. Be prepared to cite which one you used for the challenge reveal
- Your quilt project must be at least 20” on each side. (You may choose to make just one section of the quilt shown, or to make a smaller scale version if you wish).
- You may make a pattern exactly like the one shown with no variation. A slight variation would be to simply choose a different colorway than what is shown.
- You may choose to make your own variation of the pattern by altering it. Suggestions given in the powerpoint program were: Changing block Orientation, Adding negative space, Changing Scale, Altering the Grid, Extending Lines, Cropping, and Asymmetrical Design
- You may choose to use any block from any source you wish. It does not need to be the specific one from a pattern or quilt on the website. You do need to be able to cite which block or quilt on the website that was your inspiration for the change you make in your design.
- Due to other planned programming, the challenge reveal will not be until the January 2023 meeting. Therefore, there is lots of time for everyone to participate!
- There will be a prize for each participant, with no Viewer’s Choice for this challenge.
