April 9th was the REVEAL for the CFMQG Architecture Challenge 2022. There were fifteen quilts on display by sixteen makers. Thirty five members and two guests were in attendance and had the opportunity to vote on Viewer’s Choice and ask questions of the creators. The photographer apologizes to the viewers and the artists as photos appear with the “voting” number on the quilts. That one inch white square that you see on the quilt is NOT part of the design.

Ardie @fatquarteraddict used freezer paper, large freezer paper to create this original design. Clyde measures 54 by 70 and was quilted by Ardie on her Handiquilter.

The insipiration was a covered bridge. Becky @rchianese26 used her 60 degree ruler and created this original improv design named Tyler Park Diamonds. It measures approximately 48 by 54 and was quilted on her Bernina 770.

Spanish is Cindy’s interpretation of the houses on the hillside that she saw in Spain. It measures 21 by 22. She reminded us that there are no elevators and the hills are steep. Cindy @cbubblesnsews machine and hand stitched it to complete the quilting utilizing her recent thread purchases from the Wonderfil people.

This was a collaborative quilt that Jane @gonequiltinginflorida and Rosemary @franticquilter created after attending Quilt Con 2022. The view outside their hotel window was Luhrs Tower and gave them a perfect opportunity to apply the Architecture Challenge and do a little shopping at the vendors. It is an original design using Cherrywood and Grunge fabrics. It measures 23.5 by 27 and was machine quilted by Jane as well as hand quilted by Jane using Pearl Cotton Sz 8.

Janice was inspired by the Batman Building in Nashville and designed an original quilt called Angles. It measures approximately 20 by 20 and was quilted on her Bernina. Janice said besides this being a very difficult challenge for her, she learned LOTS. And that is what it is all about!

Karen saw this building in South Korea and was fascinated by it. With her math background she created a master plan using foundation paper piecing. It measures 57.5 by 57.5 and was quilted on her Babylock Tiara. She also has a variety of threads used in addition to some hand stitching. She also used some recent thread purchased from the Wonderfil people. She used Circle Quilting Rulers to make the circle patterns for quilting. You will want to expand the quilt picture to see all the details of Mars Rises in the East by Karen @sunrayatplay.

Karen T @yorkie3mom made a paper piecing pattern! She calls this her Minimal House and it measures 33 by 34. It is 3D with the addition of the chair and table. Karen quilted this on her Janome 9400 and was busy using quilting rulers.

Linda @flourishingpalms took this photo from the one and only cruise she has ever been on and said at the time “this needs to be a quilt.” It is the Miami Children’s Museum. Linda’s quilt measures 66 by 80 and is all walking foot quilted on her Bernina 770. She used three different weights of Aurifil thread (50, 40 and 28) and provided insight on the batting for future walking foot quilting. She also matched her colors and angles in her binding!

Lynette @netsyclay went river boat cruising and learned about steamboats going under bridges. The steamboat stack needs to be lowered and she was fascinated. Her original Steamboat Stack quilt measures 24.5 by 27 and was free motion quilted along with thread painted on her Janome 8200.

Mary created De-Struction and wanted to salute Ukraine. The red and white colors are the flag colors for Poland and the door is open to welcome the refugees. De-Struction measures 34 by 41 and she quilted it on her Viking.

Mel @snowmelt created Stairs of Phoenix measuring approximately 30 by 40. She shared that cold medicine and machine quilting don’t always go well together but she perservered. All the quilting was done on her Bernina 770.

Measuring at 34 by 32.5, Crazy Town Express was inspired by the metro train near Asalph Railway Station, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Mike @michaelyn_nichols had recently been working with patterns by Brenda Gael Smith and thought this was a good opportunity to combine that insight into making the brightly colored homes and train tracks. Quilting by Mike on her Janome 8900.

Missy @2quiltingminions was inspired after the presentation of the challenge in January and drawn in by the entrance to our meeting location. She said, “Why not?” Keeping Out The Rain measures 20 by 20 and was quilted on her Sapphire 960Q.

Pat created this original 3D quilt Barn in Wheat Field that measures 20 by 21. She quilted it herself on her domestic machine. Using matchstich quilting to create the barn board in addition to using torn and fraying strips of gold for the wheat. It has irregular edges and the fraying strips are just like wheat chaff in the wind.

Diamonds in the Sky by Beth @blue_dragonfly5 was identified as Viewer’s Choice. It measures 42 by 50 and is an original design influenced by a design on a door at the Civic Hotel in Surry, BC. Beth used a turned edge machine applique technique called AppliQuick and used her Viking’s walking foot to quilt it. She used three different weights of Aurifil thread, 50, 40 and 28. The background fabric is by Jennifer Sampou, Ombre’ Sky and you see it in its entirety. The quilt measures 42 by 50. Congratulations Beth!
In other grand news, a charity quilt that was created by CFMQG in 2021 was included in the New Life Christian Church, Wildwood, Florida recent fundraising event held in March for Rapha International and an individual purchased it for $600.
