What a Great Start to the New Year!

And we are off and running for 2022. Central Florida Modern Quilt Guild had their first meeting on January 8 for the new year and it was filled with information, inspiration and ideas!

First the nitty gritty stuff….The very first workshop for 2022 will be held on January 22. The Modern Wedge Workshop is SOLD OUT and twenty members will be all the wiser after Linda @flourishingpalms shows them the ins and outs of working with a wedge ruler creating an individual masterpiece.

Our next meeting is one you won’t want to miss. February 12, Cassandra Beaver will be presenting a “virtual” lesson on Aurifil thread. Cassandra is an Aurifilosopher and will share a wealth of information on thread, what types there are, when to use them and yes…there will be a swag bag for those in attendance! The lecture “Aurifilosophy” includes a trunk show and tips and techniques. Seriously, you won’t want to miss this! There will be NO Show and Tell in February.

The class is called Improv Paper Piecing and is designed for all skill levels. Attendees will attend via Zoom from the comfort of their home through the use of either their tablet, laptop, PC or mobile device with Zoom connectivity. There are still openings. Contact Karen

February means Quilt Con 2022 for several members. All those attending have assignments as they will be presenting what they learned at the March meeting. Pay attention folks! In addition, Jane is attempting to coordinate transportation to the airport on Wednesday, February 16th for those individuals that are flying Southwest, Flight #2491 at 9:20 A.M. out of Orlando International Airport. Please email Jane by January 22st if you are on that flight and wish to be a part of a group rideshare.

Show and Tell for January included an unnamed quilt by Jane @gonequiltinginfl Her quilt measures 64 by 72 and is based on Stacey Day’s pattern “Positive Influence”. Jane did some improvisational work within the pattern and made it her own. Pam Palmer used silver thread to quilt it on her long arm.

Pam @palmerfamily247 not only quilted Jane’s quilt, she created two masterpieces herself. The first is “Watercolor Quilt” measuring 32 by 32 and based on Audrey Esarey @cottonandbourbon pattern. Quilted on her Gammill Statler. And her second quilt is “Posh Santa” measuring 28 by 38. The pattern is from Sew Kind of Wonderful and uses the QCR Mini Ruler (Quick Curve Ruler). Again quilted on her Gammill.

Beth @blue_dragonfly5 was busy entering another original design for Curated Quilts Mini Challenge in Red. This is called “Merging Forces” and measures 15 by 15. The theme was “Energize” and Beth quilted it using her walking foot in addition to using her wedge rulers to create the merging arch design. It has corded binding.

Her second Show and Tell was “Independence Day” measuring 12 by 12. Beth entered this into an Art Quilt Challenge and used her ink jet printer for the blue star area and then painted the red stripes. She then triple stitched around the stripes to emphasize the wave. The quilt was walking foot quilted by Beth.

And her last Show and Tell was “Colorplay” a 66 by 66 version of the Fingerpaints Quilt Along provided by Laura @quiltfortco The quilting was done by Micky @wanderstitchcompany the grand prize for participating in the quilt along. The quilting pattern that Mickey used was Diagonal Plaid. This has a wool batting and Painter’s Palette Solids. Congratulations Beth!

Ardie @fatquarteraddict created “Sweet Potato Stars in a Cranberry Sky” using the Crazier 8’s tool by Creative Grids. Ardie loves rulers! It measures 54 by 64 and was quilted on her Handiquilter.

Janice has a goal to meet within the next five years. Her grandchildren are off to college and she wants to send them off with a quilt. Here you see “Oak Moth Quilt” measuring 57 by 68 a pattern by Lindsey Neill of Pen and Paper Patterns.

Over the New Year, Janice and her daughter Mel @snomelt got together to create. And they took on their scraps to see what they could create. Inspired by the fabric artistry in India they used their machines and scrap pile to make contemporary, machine-sewn derivation of original hand-stitched quilts made by Siddi women in India.

Our meeting included a program “Quilt Designs Inspired by Architecture” We were instructed to look around us – look at shapes, colors, lines, design as we look at the buildings, bridges, structures in our world. Rethink them into your own quilt design.

Instructions for the Challenge will be posted in a future blog. In the meantime think how that building, skyline, train track, porch railing, fountain might make a quilt. The Architecture Challenge will be revealed in April so you have time to think then do Modern!
