Returning to in-person inside meetings, there were twenty members along with three guests that found their way to our new location at New Life Christian Church, Wildwood for the June meeting. President Karen Estep welcomed everyone to the new location and explained that we are on the calendar indefinitely to continue our meetings at New Life Christian Church. Our thanks to Gwen Frey in making this happen!
Congratulations to Ardie and Betty who volunteered to oversee the Quilt Con Charity Quilt. Those members in attendance on Saturday voted on the pattern and all of us are ‘on deck’ to assist in making the blocks into a completed quilt. More news on this will appear in future posts.
A reminder to all CFMQG members – there is a “chip and charm” challenge that is underway with a reveal date at the November meeting. IF you wish to enter your creation in in Quilt Con 2022, that deadline is October 31. You can do both!
Beth @blue_dragonfly5 led the group in a hands on activity associated with NOTAN – two color quilts. Gwen and Jane brought in their two color quilts so we could mentally get set for two colors in quilts.
Members watched a short video while Beth prompted members to pay attention to specific clues that would make life easier as we tackled the project. Notan – can be defined as the Art of Balance through the Expansion of the Square. Members did two activities using colored paper to develop a better understanding of the technique. While doing the hands on activities, there were several “aha” moments.
Beth provided guidance on how to apply the technique to fabric. A simple example completed with paper provided during the meeting could potentially create up to 64 different mirror image blocks.
Key to the process would be accuracy, patience and a reminder that it is a MIRROR image! The sky is the limit with two fabrics.
Show and Tell June 2021

Gwen @flaquiltz presented “Moving Mountains” approximately 39 by 41. She used #arewethereyet and the mini Quick Curve Ruler as well as the Mini Wonderful Curves book by Jenny Pedigo and Helen Robinson. Gwen quilted this on her Bernina B750QE.

Using a panel, Gwen @flaquiltz created “God’s Glory is All Around Me.” This quilt is 49 by 68 and was quilted on Gwen’s Bernina B750QE. And check out the back…

Gwen created a modern quilt based on “Drip” in Modern Minimal by Alissa H. Carlton. Gwen created two quilts in one. Bright colors carried forward to the back of the quilt for a modern flair.

Margaret @redhotbobbin shared her version of Natalia Bonner and Kathleen Whiting’s pattern “Math Class Cabins” which she calls “Keke’s College Bound!” It is 72 by 85 and will be quilted on her APQS Millennium longarm machine.

Margaret @redhotbobbin shared her son’s art project which he painted on fabric. She wanted to pull elements from the painting into her quilting with her APQS Millennium longarm. She smiled as she said her son remembers exactly when he painted it. Currently it is finished as an 18 by 18 wall hanging, but she is thinking of making “Byrne’s Art Class Project” into a pillow. What a treasure!

“America” by Beth @blue_dragonfly5 is an original design based on the musical notes of America. The width of the stripes show the musical notes (1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and whole notes). The length of the stripe indicates which note on the musical scale (A to G) when playing America. This was a mini challenge for Curated Quilts STRIPES and BALANCE. Beth used her walking foot to matchstick quilt with her domestic machine and faced the edges.

An entry in the Curated Quilts STRIPES and BALANCE mini challenge from Beth @blue_dragonfly5 is called “Double Standard.” It is an original design, 15 by 15 that was walking foot quilted on her domestic machine. Beth’s message: America’s Double Standard is unbalanced and biased is indicated with the scale of justice and hand stitched words.

Beth @bluedragonfly5 created this original design “Force of Nature” for a mini challenge with Curated Quilts where the topic was Polygons. She echoed her design using her Husqvarna sewing machine and walking foot. She had to review the concept of polygon prior to creating her design. A three or more sided regular or irregular shape. Beth used her wedge rulers and paper pieced her design allowing her to merge colors within the wedges. The overall design reminds her of mountains, night sky and lava at night…all Forces of Nature.

Cindy @cbubblesnsews utilized Audrey Esarey’s pattern (Cotton and Bourbon) and created “Indigo Radial” a 24 by 24 pieced template. Cindy tried to tell us it was easy if one pays attention to accuracy in cutting, sewing and the overall process. She quilted it herself on her domestic sewing machine.

Cindy @cbubblesnsews shared her “Around the Square” which is a king sized quilt created with the Missouri Star simple wedge. Cindy was busy sewing blocks during the pandemic and when assembling the quilt, she realized she made more than she needed. If she had used them, the quilt would have been “just too big”. Quilted by Cindy on her domestic sewing machine.

Ardie @fatquarteraddict created “Lemonade” based on some unexpected twists while creating the Delectible Mountain block. Ardie chain pieced triangles together with the thought she could return at any time to complete her project. Oops – good plan, hard to execute. When you have a challenge, you make it your own. Quilted on her Handi Quilter, it is 54 by 54 and the backing is all cats for her friend who will be receiving it.

Carol shared a favorite quilt of her grandson. It is called “Vegetarian” and is about 29 by 29.5 It is a variation of the drunkard’s path block creating an optical illusion and completed on her domestic machine. The surprise is that the yellow fabric is fake fur.

Carol shared this original design quilted in gold thread called Callen’s Comets II. It is approximately 14 by 15.5 and is based on the Mariner’s Compass block.
Our next meeting will be July 10 at 10 AM at New Life Christian Church, Wildwood, Florida.
