Nineteen members, two of whom are new members, attended our Saturday outdoor meeting under a small picnic shelter at Lake Miona Park, The Villages.

Topics of discussion were:
- QuiltCon 2022 – February 17-20 in Phoenix, Arizona. Members are encouraged to read the May 13 email sent by the MQG. Dates are given for: 1) making QuiltCon hotel reservations; 2) QuiltCon catalog and registrations; and 3) the October 31 deadline for QuiltCon show entries, earlier than in previous years
- QuiltCon has released information about the Charity Challenge.
This is the color palette. Two or more colors must be used in a quilt that’s 65″ X 85″.

- The theme is “angles” – any angles that are NOT 90-degrees – must be acute or obtuse. Members are asked to bring a block or quilt design idea to the June 12 meeting. A chairperson and committee is needed to lead this effort. A budget is provided, and the quilt is not due until mid-January 2022. Find detailed information here.
- Our chapter’s Chip and Charm Challenge. Though the deadline for making a 15″ X 15″ or larger quilt is our November meeting, members who wish to enter their quilt in QuiltCon will need to finish earlier.
- Our future meeting location at New Life Christian Church. Next meeting is Saturday, June 12 at 10 am. Please read our last blog post for information, including a map.
BOM Show and Tell
Some of our members participated in the BOM (block-of-the-month) that was selected as an activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. This free “Modern Sunset” skill builder BOM was offered in 2013 by Alyssa Lichtner @pileofabric, and was designed with quilt-as-you-go blocks.
Jane showed her “Beating Back COVID,” 56″ X 70″ finish, explaining that she replaced two blocks for those she prefers. She enjoyed the quilt-as-you-go method, using different color threads for quilting, and after assembling the quilt, adding big stitch hand quilting. Jane finished the quilt with black and white striped binding, a popular binding fabric choice.

President Karen also finished her BOMs… she made two! Both are 30″ x 74″ bed runners. She shared that she did not enjoy the quilt-as-you-go method.

These are some of the many quilts our members made during the pandemic. Each member was limited to sharing three.
Karen @sunrayatplay made “Always Here,” a 54″ X 70″ memory quilt for a daughter-in-law, using t-shirts, jeans, and pajamas that belonged to this DIL’s parents. Karen chose the “Aurora” pattern from Heather Black’s @quiltachusetts book Quilt Modern Curves and Bold Stripes. (This book is in our library.)

This 56″ X 68″ “Dawn to Dusk” quilt is the “Atmosphere” pattern by Lee Heinrich @lee.a.heinrich. Karen ruler quilted clamshells on her Babylock Tiara.

“Plaid-is 2” is a great scrap-busting, free pattern from Erica @KitchenTableQuilting. Karen walking foot quilted it on her Janome 9400.

Jane @gonequiltinginflorida made “No Mountain Too High,” a 60″ X 80″ quilt for special friends who enjoy travel adventures while tandem biking. With help from her husband, Jane made a tandem bike silhouette that she raw-edge appliquéd to a mountain on the upper left. This pattern is “The Wilderness” by @artgalleryfabrics. She walking foot quilted it on her domestic machine.

“Shades of Purple,” a 62″ X 72″ quilt, is the project Jane started in our chapter’s “Murmurations” workshop with Rebecca Bryan @bryanhousequilts in October 2019. It’s foundation paper-pieced. Longarm quilting is by member Pam @palmerfamily237.

Beth @blue_dragonfly5 made two 43″ X 55″ quilts in 2019 that reflect a year of temperatures in Belleview, Florida (left) and Knoxville, Tennessee (right). Beth shared that these are called “generative quilts.”
The Florida quilt is called “Some Like it Hot,” and the Tennessee quilt is called “Cooler Nights.”

Beth’s 15″ X 15″ “Global Contact” quilt appears in the current COVID issue of Curated Quilts. It was selected to be included in the journal’s “Gallery,” a section for mini challenge quilts.
Her design includes a salute to health care workers and first responders; and represents 16 quilts she made and 80 books she read in 2020. Beth walking foot quilted all these quilts on her Viking domestic sewing machine
All issues of Curated Quilts journals can be found in our library.

All of these quilts can also been seen on Instagram. If you aren’t already following our account, don’t miss out! @centralfloridamqg
