Progress is being made on the Scrap Snap quilt we’re making to donate to the upcoming annual St. Jude Children’s Hospital fundraiser/raffle.
Led by Jane G, Lynette K, and Rosemary V, the project is moving along well.
Thank you to these 11 members who made Scrap Snap blocks in a variety of bright colors – yellow, orange, red, purple, and green.

Blocks were passed to Linda H for assembling into a quilt top following a color-coded diagram prepared by Jane G.
Some quilts can be assembled in a typical vertical columns/horizontal rows layout. While this quilt is assembled with blocks set on-point, it’s possible to tip the design 45-degrees and still use the vertical/horizontal assembly method.

A method, called “the web,” is very helpful for joining blocks, as it keeps blocks arranged in order, and alleviates the need to continually move back and forth from arranged blocks to the sewing machine. Blocks can be stacked in order alongside the sewing machine for easy pick-up and chain piecing. For a step-by-step tutorial about how to assemble a quilt using the web method, go here.
With this being such a large quilt – 63″ X 80″ – arranging half of the quilt blocks on a design wall was the best way to manage it.

Below is chain-piecing to join columns.

The “web” effect, which is simply chain stitching between each block, is visible in the photo below.

After the left side was chain-pieced into columns, the right side was chain-pieced.

Once the entire quilt top was chain-pieced into columns, there was no concern about blocks arranged out of order. Sewing rows together was simple and straightforward. One row of blocks was turned, right sides together, to the row next to it, and sewn. Pinning at each seam ensured that seams would match.

The completed 63″ X 80″ quilt top has extra fabric along the sides where setting triangles are positioned. This allowance is for ease in the final step, squaring-up the quilt. Now the quilt is being longarm quilted by member Pam P, who has generously offered to do the job. Thank you!

Using leftover Scrap Snap blocks, Rosemary V made these pillows that will also be donated with the quilt. They’re so cute! Thank you, Rosemary!

We appreciate everyone’s efforts with our charity quilt. It’s wonderful to see what we can do together when members pitches in. Finished quilt photos will be shared as they’re available.
