Change in Plans, Special Request, and Wrap-Up

January 2020 Meeting

As COVID-19 continues to ravage the world, locally we are experiencing an increase in new cases and hospitalizations. Because of concerns for those of us who wish to remain cautious, we’ve made the decision to not have an in-person meeting on Saturday, January 9.

Instead, we will return to our regular meeting date and time (second Monday of the month at 6:30 pm) for a Zoom meeting scheduled through the MQG’s Zoom account. The Zoom link will be emailed to members shortly beforehand. This is the date and time to put on your calendar:

Monday, January 11 – 6:30 PM

Anticipating a return to our online format, please be sure to take pictures of the modern finishes you’ve accomplished since our November 9 Show and Tell.

Email pictures to centralfloridamqg@gmail.com of up to three modern projects. You may send two to three pictures (front, back, close-up) of each project. Be sure to include:

  • project name/title
  • dimensions
  • pattern and designer information, or indicate if it’s self-designed
  • fabrics, batting, threads used
  • quilter’s name/machine used

As well, if you’re participating in the BOM, before January 9, post to Instagram pictures of your Saturn block and Candyland block using the hashtag #cfmqgbom. Those pictures will also be shared at our meeting.

Using Scraps

It seems that Central Florida MQG’s unintentional, but wonderful 2021 theme is “scraps.” Not only are members encouraged to participate in the Scrap Quilt Challengefind information here – but the charity quilt we’ll make for the May 2021 annual St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital fundraiser will be scrappy.

The 2021 charity quilt will be created using the Scrap Snap Quilt design,
available here from Quilts for the Making.

Charity quilt co-chairs, Jane @gonequiltinginflorida, Lynette @netsyclay and Rosemary @daisys_driver explain:

We will donate the quilt to St. Jude’s for their fund-raising auction that is held at the Savannah Center in May. Because the 2020 auction was cancelled due to COVID-19, we’ll have two quilts for St. Jude’s this year.

We need your input on the color scheme by Monday, January 4!

Please let us know what color dominates your scrap pile and whether you’re willing to share some of your scraps (if needed).  Also, please let us know if you’d be willing to help sew the quilt blocks. EMAIL

Once we decide on the color scheme, we’ll provide you with the solid color fabric to be used with your scraps. Please respond to this EMAIL by Monday, January 4! Thank you!

December 12 Park Social

On an overcast Saturday at Lake Miona Park in The Villages, 19 CFMQG members came to see each other face-to-face – a socially-distanced, mask-wearing gathering.

Following our annual tradition, those wishing to participate brought along a $12-$15 quilting-related, wrapped gift to exchange and/or steal.

A sense of humor prevailed as pandemic, in-short-supply items were included with gifts.

Peggy @thislittlepiggysews agreed to a picture with the fabrics she received, and T.P. and hand sanitizers!

Our annual group photo looks a little different this year. Everyone IS grinning. (I’m sure!)

And we couldn’t let the get-together pass without taking the usual goofy picture.

Ahh… what a difference a year makes.

We’re all looking forward to seeing what the new year has in store.
