Anne explained that “Design As You Go” isn’t a techniques workshop, but a way to approach improvisational piecing using design elements and principles.
Some quilters most often use color as a tool for designing a quilt, but many other elements can be utilized: lines, shapes, space, and texture.
… and how it changes with the use of warm colors.
Dark colors add weight. A new shape (upper right) introduces a completely different look, even while using the same colors.
Since design is also about experimenting, a combination of shapes creates another design.
Every quilter in the room dug into scraps and began experimenting.

The workshop concluded with a big clean-up, and everyone left with a different perspective on improv and how they can experiment and play.
